Puppy Information that Every Pet Owner Needs to Know
Get YourPuppy from a Shelter or Reputable Breeder– Puppies for sale by disreputable breeders are less likely to have been taken care of when they were young. Remember; these breeders often aren’t breeding the pups for love, they are breeding them simply for the money. If no one was buying the puppies they had for premium prices, they wouldn’t be able to stay in business without treating their puppies well and showing customers that they genuinely care about the animals they are raising.
Puppies, like children, need training and love– Just like you wouldn’t slap your child for doing something he or she shouldn’t have done, you shouldn’t treat your puppy this way either. We know they can be frustrating some times, but you should never, ever hit your puppy in anger.
Ignore, Interrupt, or Redirect bad behaviour– Rather than resorting to physical punishment, remember “IIR” Ignore the bad behaviour in the puppy, Interrupt the bad behaviour in the puppy, or redirect the bad behavior in the puppy. Using these there tactics, you can pretty much deal with anything that your puppy throws or, …er…, drops for you.
Dogs, just like people, don’t like to be ignored and this can be used as a tool. Just be sure that while giving your dog the cold shoulder that you don’t keep it up too long or it may have forgotten what happened!
If you can catch bad behavior early enough, you can use this to minimize the ‘imprint’ that such behavior leaves and spend the time doing something more constructive; like playing!
Redirecting will give your puppy information about what to do rather than what not to do. Remember: Puppies are learning all the time!
Make Sure You Add the Puppy Information
By “puppy information”, we mean making sure that your new friend has a dog collar with identification of some kind. This may be a tag from the veterinarian, or it could be a tag that you had special made at your local pet store. It doesn’t matter where you get your dog collar, what matters is that you have one on your puppy. It’s better to be safe than…lost.
Dog-Proof Your Home and Yard– This should be obvious, but it is worth mentioning simply because it is so important. Puppies will put anything in their mouths, especially when they are young and learning about the world. Make sure that you have nothing lying around that can hurt or poision your puppy.
Hopefully this has answered some of your questions about dog training, puppy training or perhaps how to care for a new puppy. Don’t forget to look around the page for more useful puppy information!
